How to Answer “What’s Your Biggest Weakness?” Without Ruining Your Interview

One interview question still catches many candidates off guard:

“What’s your biggest weakness?”

Most people make one of two mistakes:

❌ Giving fake weaknesses like:
“I’m a perfectionist.”

OR

❌ Sharing real weaknesses that damage their credibility.

The problem?

Interviewers can usually spot rehearsed answers immediately.

And if you mention a weakness without showing improvement, it can raise concerns about your self-awareness and professional growth.

Here’s a better approach 👇

Use this simple 3-step structure:

1️⃣ Acknowledge a real but manageable weakness
2️⃣ Explain what you’re actively doing to improve it
3️⃣ Share measurable progress or outcomes

This shows:
✓ Self-awareness
✓ Accountability
✓ Growth mindset
✓ Professional maturity

Example:

“I used to struggle with delegating tasks because I worried about quality control. This sometimes led to me taking on too much work and creating bottlenecks for my team.

Over the past year, I’ve worked on improving this by delegating smaller tasks first, setting clearer expectations, and introducing regular check-ins during project delivery.

As a result, my team’s productivity improved significantly, and I’ve been able to focus more on strategic planning and leadership responsibilities. I’m continuing to strengthen this skill through leadership training and practical experience.”

The goal is not to sound perfect.

The goal is to show that you can recognise weaknesses, take action, and improve professionally.

That’s what strong interviewers actually look for.
