How to Answer 'What Is Your Greatest Weakness' Without Sabotaging Yourself

The Problem

Most candidates either give fake weaknesses that sound like strengths ('I'm a perfectionist') or reveal genuine flaws that make them unhirable ('I'm always late'). Both approaches backfire because interviewers see through the first and worry about the second. You end up sounding either dishonest or incompetent.

The Fix

Choose a real weakness that's not central to the role, then immediately pivot to what you're doing to improve it. The key is showing self-awareness and growth mindset. Pick something genuine but manageable, then demonstrate concrete steps you've taken to address it. This shows maturity and commitment to professional development.

Example

'Early in my career, I struggled with public speaking and would avoid presenting whenever possible. I realized this was limiting my impact, so I joined Toastmasters two years ago and have been practicing regularly. I still get nervous before big presentations, but I've developed techniques like thorough preparation and breathing exercises that help me deliver confidently. Last month, I successfully presented our quarterly results to the executive team, and my manager complimented my clear communication. I'm continuing to work on this skill because I know it's crucial for leadership roles.'
